Communicating with the Hearing Salesperson

Hearing impaired I said. I’m hearing impaired. Could you please rephrase what you just said?

Oh, I’m sorry, I know how to fingerspell and sign.

No, sorry, I don’t sign, I’m hearing impaired.

I just need you to give me the “subject” and then rephrase what you said.  I’m just not catching what you are trying to tell me.

I know you heard what I said a few minutes ago. You even responded correctly. Okay,  okay, I’ll repeat it.

You don’t have to exaggerate your mouth movements and you don’t have to yell.  That makes it even harder for me to understand what you’re saying. It distorts all the words.

Well, how do you know I’m YEEELLLLLING?

Did I mention I’m deaf?

Oh no, I’m soooooo sorry, but I bet you’re a great lipreader.  But wait, I can sign to you. I took one class in college 12 years ago.

Never mind! I’ll buy an outfit online.

  1. WORD!

I’ve had experience with people like this and make it no secret how displeased I am with their attitude. I vote with my feet as well and walk right on out after letting them know why. Geeze – would they like to be treated like that?

  2. How did I miss this post? I just realized why I’ve been shopping on line so much! It gets old when people make assumptions about how we need to communicate after we’ve just told them. Faced with the choice of boring them to death with a fifteen minute lecture about audiograms, background noise and the inadequacies of hearing aids or shopping from the relative comfort of my sofa, it’s a no-brainer– except when I need to go shoes shopping. You have to try on shoes. And slacks. But other than that. . . .

  3. GREAT REVIEW! I agree with all your thoughts you said in your article, especially at the middle of your article. Thank you, your post is very valuable as always. Keep up the good work! You’ve got +1 more reader of your super blog:)

  4. Thank you. This is way too common an experience for me. You know what’s worse? Salespeople with robotic scripts who talk to me from behind. Happened to me yesterday.
