About Saywhatclub online peer support

Learn about SayWhatClub online peer to peer support. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, incorporated in Washington State, available for international subscription. We provide online peer to peer support for people with hearing loss, and their loved ones. Most of our subscribers and all of our board members have hearing loss.

Hearing loss statistics

According to the Hearing Health Foundation, nearly fifty million people in the US have hearing loss. Due to exposure to noise, about one in five teenagers has hearing loss, and sixty percent of veterans returning from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq suffer from hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Additionally, twenty percent of all Americans suffer from tinnitus.

online peer to peer support for people with hearing loss

The SayWhatClub’s goal is to provide online peer to peer support for people with hearing loss. SayWhatClub (SWC) connects to its subscribers through an email listserv, two closed Facebook groups and a public Facebook page.

Four of our email lists are for general discussion. Our cochlear implant list focuses on cochlear implants only. We also operate two Facebook groups – one for all adults eighteen and over, and one for younger adults forty and under. Between our email lists and Facebook groups, we have a subscribership of nearly two thousand.

Education and social support

The SayWhatClub offers online peer to peer support as well as face to face time with others who have hearing loss.

Each year, we hold an annual convention somewhere in the North America to facilitate face to face social connections between subscribers, and to offer hands-on learning and coping skills in our workshops. Our workshops focus on educating the public about hearing loss issues such as:

  • self advocacy
  • new technology
  • ADA laws
  • self-esteem building
  • communication
  • relationships, and more.

Access

Our email lists and Facebook groups offer an easy way to communicate, since hearing isn’t necessary. Also, all of our workshops have Computer Aided Real-time Translation (CART), and we install a conductive looping system that allows sound to be transmitted directly to hearing devices that have t-coil technology.

The SayWhatClub is completely run by volunteers and funded through subscriber and sponsor donations.

“I joined SWC after five years of struggling with hearing loss. It opened my eyes (and ears) to so many possibilities! The members were so warm and welcoming and helped me feel not so alone. I love my SWC family.”
